چکیده

This work is an acoustic investigation on some spectral and temporal characteristics of the speech of patients with recurrent paralyses, and also of patients without diagnosed paralyses but with alteration of their voice after thyroid surgery. Speech is evaluated during two tasks: producing sustained vowels and also a sequence of nonsense words. Consequences of surgery on the voice of patients are evaluated in order to identify the different perturbations that such a surgery may provoke, and also to uncover probable compensatory or readjustment strategies which a patient might deploy, alone or with the help of speech therapy. Globally, results show that due to surgery, some aspects of the speech production system are perturbed, as highlighted by the spatial and temporal parameters measured. However, these parameters tend to become normal as the patient recovers, in time and with the help of speech therapy. This is a longitudinal study.

Comparison of the Frequency of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Injury with and without Exploration of the Nerve in Thyroidectomy

Background & Aims: Surgeons are not willing to participate in thyroid surgeries due to dangerous, although rare, complications of the procedure. Post thyroidectomy complications are divided in early and late onset; hypocalcemia, bleeding, thyroid storm and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury are the most important ones. This study was performed to compare the frequency of recurrent laryngeal...

[Intraoperative neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery].

BACKGROUND Intraoperative neuromonitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in thyroid surgery facilitates the identification of anatomical structures in cervical endocrine surgery reducing the frequency of vocal cord paralysis. OBJECTIVE To study the normal electrophysiological values of the vague and recurrent laryngeal nerves before and after thyroid surgery. To compare rates of injury of r...

A prospective evaluation of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis during thyroidectomy.

HYPOTHESIS Recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis after thyroidectomy can be unrecognized without routine laryngoscopy, and patients have a good potential for recovery during follow-up. DESIGN A prospective evaluation of vocal cord function before and after thyroidectomy. Periodic vocal cord assessment was performed until recovery of cord function. Persistent cord palsy for longer than 12 months...
